Fishing along the Pacific coast is good throughout the year, although areas vary depending on the weather conditions of the time of year in particular and marinas.

The southern Pacific coast, from Golfito and extends to Drake Bay, is a region of special distinction. Well known for its variety throughout the year, this area has taken over 40 IGFA world records and has thousands of species including mackerel, grouper, snapper, barracuda, roosterfish, wahoo, snook, and even tuna 400 pounds. The southern end of the Pacific coast is also a great place to find the usual assortment of snapper, tuna, and wahoo. In addition, river mouths Jaco Golfito are loaded with bass.

In the last three or four years, the Central Coast in Quepos has become very popular due to a change in the migratory habits of billfish. Now come to these waters in December. The action is very good until about April or May and then the weevil population moves north. Besides billfish, there is a plentiful supply of jacks, wahoo, tuna, roosterfish and in this area. The region does have its fair share of sailfish and marlin, but is best known for his phenomenal snapper, large tuna, snapper, wahoo, roosterfish and. Quepos boats run tours of several days to Drake Bay and Caño Island, and guests can overnight in one of the many wilderness camps and eco-hotels.

It is a long distance from Herradura blue water south of Cape Blanco or outside, so most anglers opt for stunning coastal fishing in the area. Boats usually run about 7-15 miles outside Cabo Velas looking for sailfish and marlin. They also visit the Catalina and Bat Islands. Also found around these areas are jacks, tuna, wahoo, snapper and roosterfish.

Around December, when the north winds are driving through the area, the ships are either inshore or moved around the corner from Cabo Velas and head south to Punta Guiones, where the waters are calmer. In this area, under Scripts, boat service can be found in Nosara, Samara and Playa Carillo. These spots are in season throughout the year. North Guanacaste has the largest concentration of charter boats in the country. Most of these companies fish out of Marina Flamingo Beach, Tamarindo, and Coco Beach area including Ocotal. The peak season for sailfish and marlin from May to August, and frequently continues into December, when northerly winds arrive. January, August and September are also good months for Marlin, however, are the warmer waters of El Niño pursuing the needle away.
